– A Journey She Never Planned, But Was Meant to Take
If you would have asked Tonia Fairbanks in college whether she planned to become a teacher, her answer would have been a firm, “No, ma’am.”
Raised by two educators, she had a front-row seat to the realities of teaching—eager students, yes, but also those with deep challenges and complex needs. After seeing what her parents experienced, she was certain it wasn’t the life for her. But as life has a way of doing, it took her in a direction she never expected—and one she now knows was divinely guided.
With 20 years of experience in the classroom, Ms. Fairbanks has become a pillar of inspiration as a 9–12 Spanish teacher. Her path began with a major in Biology and a minor in Spanish, unsure of what would come next. Her mom kept telling her, “You should be a teacher! It’s an honorable profession!” But she wasn’t convinced. That is, until purpose caught up with her. “Being an educator wasn’t my plan,” she says. “It was definitely God’s.”
What keeps her going? Two things stand out above the rest—relationships and breakthroughs.
For Ms. Fairbanks, it’s all about connection. She knows her students may not love Spanish class on day one, but they try, they participate, and they grow—because they feel seen by her. They know she believes in them, and they want to make her proud. And when they do, she celebrates them wholeheartedly. Those small moments of encouragement? They go a long way.
And then there are the “aha” moments—the spark in a student’s eyes when something finally clicks after they’ve struggled. For her, there’s nothing more fulfilling.
One of her proudest recent moments came when she took her Level 2 Spanish students to an authentic Latin restaurant. Not just to eat—but to speak. Her students used their Spanish skills to order food and interact with the staff. Watching them confidently engage in real conversation brought her immense pride. It was a moment where the classroom became real life—and her students realized just how much they were capable of.
Still, Ms. Fairbanks wishes more people understood that teachers are human too. They pour so much into their students, often while being told how to do their jobs by those who’ve never been in their shoes. She calls for grace—the same kind of grace that teachers are expected to extend to every student, every day.
Above all, she believes teachers and parents must work together. “We’re not on opposite sides,” she says. “The goal is to develop each student into a successfully productive global citizen. Let’s work collaboratively to make that happen.”
Ms. Fairbanks is the kind of teacher who didn’t set out to be an educator—but answered a higher calling. And because she did, hundreds of students are better for it.
Thank you, Ms. Fairbanks, for showing up, lifting others, and leading with heart. You remind us why teachers are true difference-makers—every single day.
