Some classrooms are built around desks.
Others are built around courage.
For Mr. Wier, a high school theatre and speech teacher, the classroom is a space where students learn far more than content; they learn how to express themselves, communicate clearly, and step into confidence.
“I have always wanted to become a teacher for theatre arts. Giving students an outlet to perform and develop their social/emotional skills and communicative abilities at the same time is extremely important to me.”
What began as a role in colorguard instruction has grown into a full-time career in theatre education, where he now teaches Speech, Show Choir, Colorguard, and Stagecraft.
At the center of his work is a moment every educator knows well.
“The ‘light bulb’ moment when a student truly understands the content I’ve been teaching.”
In theatre, those moments often look a little different. They happen in rehearsals, in performances, and in the quiet realization that a student is capable of more than they thought.
Mr. Wier also recognizes that great teaching is never done alone.
He expressed gratitude for the leadership team that supported his program and helped restore and strengthen the auditorium space for students… a reminder that strong schools are built through collaboration.
In his classroom, learning is active, engaging, and often a little unexpected. One activity he recommends?
“Pick up a copy of ‘Moose Master’ for a really great communication lesson… playing a game with constantly changing rules gets students to think on their feet.”
It’s a perfect reflection of his teaching style— dynamic, challenging, and centered around real world skills.
At Oklahoma Citizens for Education, we believe that every step of the way, an educator is there shaping who we become.
Mr. Wier is doing exactly that; helping students find their voice, their confidence, and their place.
Congratulations on being recognized as Teacher of the Month.
